diplomats. and what is the signal that our government is sending the rest of the world? >> joining me now is traveling press secretary for the obama campaign. great to have you here. >> good morning. >> i want to remind everybody that if we need to interrupt and jump out of this because mitt romney will be sitting down with brian williams. so i just want to give you fair warning that we may have to jump over to that. but as we have heard, everybody has been tough on the president and rudy giuliani was asked about the president not having any by lot ral melateral meetin planned and here's what he had to say. >> he's not doing the job of being president, he's doing the job of candidate. president obama has decided at a time grave crisis that he regards as bump in the road that he can take the time not to be president for the next six weeks and let it just play itself out p. >> as we look back over history in 2004, george w. bush held five bilateral meetings at the u.n., last year president obama had 13 one-on-one meetings. just using the president's own examples of meetings from last year,

't have a driver's license, a government-issued photo i.d. could get the michigan state identification card. then the state said that can be used to board airplanes. we need all sorts of forms of identification. then the state changed its mind and said we'll issue a voter i.d. card that's different. only if you can't get the other card. then they changed their mind on that. the judge said i can't be sure. even though the state has now cured a lot of these problems, i can't be sure enough people are going to be able to get the right kind of identification to allow this law to go into effect. i'm going to let the state continue to educate people about the need for photo i.d. i'm going to let the state ask for photo i.d. atle positive, but enjoin the part of the law that requires voters to have photo i.d. people wanted it all put on hold. the judge said i don't need to go that far. there is always the possibility the state could go back to the supreme court on this, but begin how skeptical the supreme court was when they looked at this a few weeks ago, i think it's over. that means that t

on the government. this has sparked a lot of reaction obviously. what did he really mean by that? >> yes. he was obviously inarticulate at making this point. >> joining me in studio is msnbc contributor and daily beast columnist meghan mccain and son of the former president reagan. meghan, politico columnist wrote a satire call piece about romney and ryan and spoke to my colleague jansing. >> paul ryan is treated like a surrogate. he doesn't get to choose his own staff. he has a staff loyal to mitt romney around him every minute. he is told what to say and told what to do. that's fine as long as romney is winning. but romney is not winning. he's losing. and that unleashes the presidential candidate to act in his or her own way to unleash sarah palin to start attacking barack obama more. >> so meghan, as we all know. your dad certainly dealt with tensions within the ticket of himself, sarah palin, for any of these candidates, though, behind the scenes there is ego, ambition, and the perception of what the voters see. do you think there is a behind the scenes strain that's going on because, as

. we have a choice between a president with a record who promotes government dependency as opposed to romney who will help upward mobility for this country. that's a choice the american people want to make and they will make an informed choice based on the facts getting out there. >> you don't think it helped mitt romney had the primary to go through going up against your former bosses in those debates? >> those are certainly helpful. but when you have obviously more than one person you're going against, it's rather difficult. but the good thing as we saw in '08, what he was good with the mccain/obama debates, he let them go face to face. i expect to see that wednesday night. that's good. get the two of them in there debating the issues. make sure each of them are factually accurate about their records. focusing on the economy wednesday night. but foreign policy is something that's critically important given the current state of foreign policy where we have a leader now whose foreign policy has made us weak in the eye of the rest of the world whereas governor romney believe in peac

. >> there are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims. who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them. who believe that they're entitled. >> that strategy there seems less about touting the president's record and more about attacking governor romney's. what's your take on that? >> i think one thing the obama campaign has done extraordinarily well, is from june, from may, from may on, they have done a great job of defining governor romney. now, governor romney handed them a big gift-wrapped package with that florida speech that he made that was caught on tape. that's about as bad a look into someone saying things about the american people that's disastrous as i've ever seen in presidential politics. so they're continuing to pound it. it's a campaign tactic and there's no question about it. and it's interesting, in response to robert's point, i think the enthusiasm gap, which at the beginning of the year, the republicans have a huge gap that their voters were not as enthusiastic as repub

businesses, job creators and do more to have a government-centered economy. which is what we've had for the past four years and we're still at 8.1 unemployment with 23 million americans looking for jobs. i think that president obama can't change the facts on wednesday night. and i think the contrast will be very clear. so i look forward to seeing that. >> let's talk about the figure, 8.1% unemployment that could be a conservative estimate. when you take into the fact the folks who have just stopped looking. that's been the economic reality in this country for several months now. but governor romney has not been able to move the needle. in fact in many of the battleground states, the needle has started to move in the opposite direction for him. despite these numbers that you just pointed out. why is that? why is the message not resonated yet with just 37 days left? >> you know, i think like i've mentioned earlier. the polls will tighten. you're going to see independents are still very interested, following this very closely. independents are very pro romney and i think you're going t
